When you receive your pathology report, the numbers can feel like a foreign language. While your GP or Fertility Specialist looks for clinical ranges, a TCM practitioner looks for vitality, balance, and the quality of your reproductive ‘Essence.’
The Bridge Between Science and Tradition
At Acuvia Acupuncture in East Melbourne, we don’t ignore blood tests—we embrace them. Modern pathology gives us a snapshot of the chemical messengers (hormones) currently circulating in your system. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) gives us the context of why those messengers might be loud, quiet, or out of sync.
By layering these two perspectives, we can create a highly targeted pre-conception plan that treats you as a whole person, not just a set of data points.
1. FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone)
The Western View: FSH is the signal from your brain telling your ovaries to grow a follicle. High FSH often indicates the brain is “shouting” because the ovaries are slow to respond (low ovarian reserve).
In TCM, FSH represents the effort the body must make to initiate growth. If FSH is high (typically >10 mIU/mL on Day 3), we often see it as a sign of Kidney Yin Deficiency. Yin is the cooling, nourishing “substance.” When Yin is low, the body creates “Empty Heat,” causing the FSH to spike. Our goal is to nourish the Yin to “cool” the system and quiet the brain’s shouting.
2. AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormone)
The Western View: AMH is produced by the small, resting follicles in the ovaries. It is used as a marker for ovarian reserve—essentially, how many “eggs are in the basket.”
AMH is the closest modern marker we have to Kidney Jing. Jing is your inherited reproductive “battery.” While Western medicine suggests AMH is fixed, TCM focuses on the quality of the environment surrounding those follicles. We use acupuncture to improve microcirculation to the ovaries, ensuring that regardless of the quantity (AMH), the quality of the follicles being recruited is optimized.
3. Progesterone (The “Pregnancy” Hormone)
The Western View: Produced by the corpus luteum after ovulation, progesterone prepares the uterine lining for implantation. Low levels can lead to a short luteal phase or spotting.
Progesterone is the ultimate Yang hormone. Yang is warmth, movement, and transformation. If your mid-luteal progesterone is low, your “Basal Body Temperature” may struggle to stay elevated. We use warming therapies like Moxibustion to support the Kidney Yang, helping to “ripen” the uterine environment and support the early stages of pregnancy.
The Integrative Reference Table
This table illustrates how we correlate common lab findings with TCM patterns to customize your acupuncture sessions.
| Lab Marker | Clinical Finding | TCM Interpretation | Acupuncture Focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| High FSH | Diminished Reserve | Kidney Yin Deficiency | Nourish Fluids & Clear Heat |
| Low Progesterone | Short Luteal Phase | Kidney Yang Deficiency | Moxibustion & Warming |
| High LH : FSH Ratio | Possible PCOS | Phlegm-Damp Stagnation | Resolve Damp & Move Qi |
| High Prolactin | Stress/Ovulation issues | Liver Qi Stagnation | Regulate Nervous System |
Beyond the Reference Range
One of the frustrations of reading blood tests is being told you are “within normal range” while still feeling that something is wrong. TCM excels in this “sub-clinical” space. We look for trends. For example, an FSH of 9 is “normal” in Western medicine, but in TCM, it may already suggest the beginning of Yin depletion that we can address before it becomes a clinical hurdle.
If you are currently undergoing IVF, understanding these markers is even more critical. We invite you to read our guide on Acupuncture During Stimulation to see how we use these markers to manage side effects.
