Acupuncture for IVF: Optimising Pre & Post Embryo Transfer
Clinical, evidence-based integrative support for your fertility journey in East Melbourne.
The Science: Why Acupuncture for Transfer Day?
Successful implantation requires two things: a healthy embryo and a receptive uterine environment. While your fertility specialists manage the embryo, acupuncture focuses on the receptivity of the uterine lining and the systemic state of the body.
1. Enhancing Uterine Blood Flow
Acupuncture has been shown to decrease uterine artery impedance—essentially “lowering the resistance” of the blood vessels supplying the uterus. By encouraging vasodilation, we ensure that the uterine lining is richly supplied with oxygenated, nutrient-dense blood. This is crucial for supporting the early stages of implantation and creating an optimal environment for the embryo to thrive.
2. Reducing Uterine Contractility
The process of an embryo transfer involves the passage of a catheter through the cervix. For some, this can trigger mild uterine cramping or contractions. In the context of a transfer, we want the uterus to be as quiet and relaxed as possible. Acupuncture helps to soothe the smooth muscles of the uterus, potentially preventing the micro-contractions that could interfere with the embryo’s ability to “stick.”
3. Neurological Regulation & The ‘Two-Week Wait’
High levels of cortisol and adrenaline—the body’s primary stress hormones—can lead to vasoconstriction, the opposite of what we want for uterine blood flow. By stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system, acupuncture helps “switch off” the fight-or-flight response. This not only supports the physical transfer but provides a much-needed neurological reset for the patient as they enter the emotionally taxing “two-week wait.”
The Acuvia Transfer Day Protocol
Consistency and timing are key. At our East Melbourne clinic, we strive to accommodate the sometimes unpredictable scheduling of IVF clinics.
The Pre-Transfer Session
Performed ideally on the morning of or shortly before your appointment at the fertility clinic. This treatment focuses on opening the blood flow to the pelvic cavity, relaxing the cervix, and calming the central nervous system. We use points that have been clinically shown to support the HPO axis and prepare the body for the procedure.
The Post-Transfer Session
Performed shortly after your transfer (ideally within 24 hours). This session is dedicated to “containment.” We use specific points to support the luteal phase, encourage progesterone receptivity, and provide a deep sense of relaxation. This treatment is gentle, comforting, and designed to help you transition into the post-transfer rest period.
Support for Frozen Embryo Transfers (FET)
For those undergoing a Frozen Embryo Transfer, our focus shifts slightly toward the preparation of the lining over several weeks. However, the day-of protocol remains a vital part of the process, ensuring the body is not in a state of high-stress during the thaw and transfer window.
Beyond the Day of Transfer
While the pre and post sessions are the most famous, we advocate for a “whole cycle” approach. Preparing the body in the months leading up to a retrieval or transfer allows us to address underlying issues such as inflammation, egg quality, and hormonal imbalances. If you are already mid-cycle, starting acupuncture now can still provide significant benefits in blood flow and stress management.
Transfer Day FAQ
What if my transfer is on a weekend or early morning? We understand that IVF schedules are fluid. We do our best to prioritize transfer day patients and offer flexible scheduling to ensure you can get your pre and post sessions as close to your transfer time as possible.
Are the points used safe for the embryo?Absolutely. We use “pregnancy-safe” protocols. There are certain acupuncture points that are traditionally avoided during pregnancy; our practitioners are highly trained in fertility acupuncture and strictly avoid any points that could be stimulatory to the uterus in an unsafe way.
Does it matter if it is a fresh or frozen transfer?Acupuncture is beneficial for both. While the hormonal environment of a fresh transfer (following retrieval) is different from a frozen transfer, the goal of uterine blood flow and nervous system calm remains the same.
How soon after the post-transfer session can I go home?Immediately. In fact, our patients often find that the session itself is the most relaxing part of their day, allowing them to go home in a state of deep rest, which is exactly what the body needs following a transfer.
