1. General & New Patient Enquiries

Do I need a GP referral to book at Acuvia?

No. In Australia, Acupuncturists and Chinese Medicine practitioners are primary healthcare providers. You can book directly with us without a referral. However, we highly value integrated care and often work alongside your GP or specialist to ensure the best clinical outcomes, particularly for chronic conditions or fertility support.

What should I expect during my first consultation?

Your initial appointment is a comprehensive clinical assessment. Unlike a quick “symptom-fix” visit, we spend time discussing your full medical history, sleep patterns, digestive health, and specific health goals. We utilize traditional diagnostic methods such as pulse and tongue analysis alongside modern physical assessments to create a bespoke treatment plan tailored to your physiology.

Does acupuncture hurt?

This is the most common concern for new patients. Acupuncture needles are extremely fine—significantly thinner than a standard medical syringe. Most patients report a mild sensation of pressure or a slight “tingle” upon insertion. Many find the process so relaxing that they fall asleep during the treatment. At Acuvia, we prioritize patient comfort and utilize gentle, precision-needling techniques.

2. Clinical Science & Methodology

How exactly does acupuncture work from a scientific perspective?

Modern research suggests that acupuncture works by modulating the nervous system. The insertion of needles at specific anatomical points stimulates peripheral nerves, which send signals to the brain to release endorphins (natural painkillers) and regulate the autonomic nervous system. This process helps lower systemic inflammation, improve blood circulation, and balance the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which is responsible for the body’s stress response.

Is clinical acupuncture different from ‘Dry Needling’?

Yes, significantly. While dry needling is a localized technique used to release muscular “trigger points,” clinical acupuncture is a comprehensive medical system. AHPRA-registered acupuncturists undergo four to five years of university training to understand the internal connections between organs, hormones, and the nervous system. While we do utilize trigger point therapy for pain, we also address the internal imbalances causing the issue.

Are the needles safe and sterile?

Safety is non-negotiable at Acuvia. We use only high-quality, medical-grade, single-use sterile needles. Every needle is disposed of in a clinical sharps container immediately after use. As AHPRA-registered practitioners, we adhere to the strictest infection control guidelines in Australia.

3. IVF, Fertility & Women’s Health

How does acupuncture support the IVF process?

Clinical acupuncture is frequently used as a supportive therapy for IVF. Our protocols focus on three key areas: increasing uterine blood flow to support lining thickness, regulating the neuro-endocrine axis to manage the body’s response to hormonal stimulation, and significantly reducing the stress and anxiety that often accompany assisted reproductive cycles. We provide specific ‘Transfer Day’ protocols that align with current clinical research.

When is the best time to start fertility acupuncture?

While acupuncture can be beneficial at any stage, we ideally recommend starting 2 to 3 months before a planned conception or IVF cycle. This timeframe allows us to work on follicular development and cycle regulation. However, if you are already mid-cycle, we can provide acute support to assist with specific phases such as egg retrieval or embryo transfer.

Can acupuncture help with hormonal issues like PCOS or Endometriosis?

Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are utilized to manage the symptoms of PCOS and Endometriosis by focusing on hormonal balance and inflammatory control. For PCOS, we focus on metabolic health and insulin sensitivity. For Endometriosis, our clinical focus is on pain management and improving blood circulation in the pelvic cavity to reduce stasis and discomfort.

4. Pain Management & Neurological Support

What types of pain are best treated with acupuncture?

Clinical acupuncture has a strong evidence base for treating chronic lower back pain, neck pain, osteoarthritis, and tension-type headaches. We also specialize in treating neuropathic pain and “Tech Neck”—the postural strain associated with long hours of desk work common among our CBD and Richmond professional patients.

How does acupuncture help with chronic migraines?

Migraine management involves more than just pain relief; it requires neurovascular regulation. Acupuncture helps by modulating the trigeminal nerve pathway and reducing the release of pro-inflammatory neuropeptides. Many of our patients find that consistent treatment reduces both the frequency and the intensity of their migraine attacks, often allowing them to reduce their reliance on acute medications.

5. Costs, Rebates & Logistics

Can I claim my session on my private health fund?

Yes. If your private health insurance includes ‘Extras’ cover for acupuncture, you can claim on the spot at our East Melbourne clinic via HICAPS. Most major funds, including Medibank, Bupa, NIB, and HCF, provide rebates. The amount covered depends on your individual policy level.

Where is Acuvia located and is there parking?

Acuvia is located at 12 Wellington Parade, East Melbourne. We are conveniently situated near the corner of Jolimont Station. There is ample 1-hour and 2-hour metered parking on Wellington Parade and Jolimont Street, as well as easy access via the 48, 75, and 109 trams.

What is your cancellation policy?

We value your time and the time of our practitioners. We require 24 hours’ notice for any cancellations or rescheduling. This allows us to offer the appointment time to other patients on our waiting list. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours’ notice may incur a fee.

Acuvia is a clinical allied health practice. The information provided in this FAQ is for educational purposes and does not replace professional medical advice. All practitioners are AHPRA-registered with the Chinese Medicine Board of Australia (CMBA).
