Clinical Neuro-Gastroenterology Support. Targeted Protocols for LES Dysfunction, Chronic Throat Clearing, and Upper Digestive Distress.
Understanding LPR and “Silent Reflux”
While most people are familiar with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), many are unaware of its often-overlooked counterpart: **Laryngopharyngeal Reflux (LPR)**. Often referred to as “Silent Reflux,” LPR occurs when stomach acid or enzymes (pepsin) travel past the esophagus and reach the throat and larynx. Unlike GERD, LPR may not present with traditional heartburn, making it difficult to diagnose and even harder to manage with standard anti-acid medications. At Acuvia Acupuncture Clinic, we provide a specialized neuro-biological approach to treating the root causes of chronic reflux.
Led by Stomy Jose, a Registered TCM Practitioner with over 15 years of experience, our clinic addresses the physical and neurological mechanisms that govern the Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES) and the Upper Esophageal Sphincter (UES). We offer a professional clinical environment for patients whose reflux symptoms are exacerbated by professional stress, posture, or autonomic nervous system imbalances.
Sphincter Tone Regulation
Acupuncture helps modulate the neural signals that control the opening and closing of the LES. By improving sphincter tone, we help prevent the retrograde movement of acid into the sensitive tissues of the throat.
Visceral Nerve Modulation
LPR is often associated with hypersensitivity of the vagus nerve. Clinical protocols help ‘quieten’ the irritated nerves that trigger chronic throat clearing and the sensation of a ‘lump’ in the throat (globus).
Gastric Emptying Support
Slow gastric emptying increases intra-abdominal pressure, forcing acid upward. Acupuncture facilitates healthy peristalsis and timely gastric clearance, reducing the mechanical pressure on the esophageal valves.
The Neuro-Biological Link: Reflux and the Vagus Nerve
The **Vagus Nerve** is the primary regulator of the digestive tract. It governs the rhythmic contractions of the stomach and the relaxation of the esophageal sphincters. In many chronic reflux cases—particularly those triggered by stress—the Vagus nerve becomes dysregulated. This leads to Transient Lower Esophageal Sphincter Relaxations (TLESRs), where the valve opens at inappropriate times, allowing pepsin and acid to escape into the larynx.
At our clinic, we utilize targeted Vagus Nerve Stimulation to recalibrate the ‘Rest and Digest’ system. By increasing vagal tone, we not only improve the mechanical function of the digestive valves but also reduce the systemic inflammation that makes the lining of the throat more susceptible to acid damage. This clinical approach is particularly effective for “Silent Reflux” patients who have found limited success with PPIs or H2 blockers.
Our Specialist Reflux Framework
To provide exhaustive care for our patients, we utilize a multi-staged clinical framework designed to stabilize the esophagus and prevent recurrence:
1. Inflammatory De-escalation
The initial phase focuses on reducing the irritation in the throat and esophagus. We address symptoms such as chronic cough, hoarseness, and the constant need to clear the throat by modulating the body’s inflammatory response and reducing nerve hypersensitivity.
2. Mechanical Correction & Motility
In this phase, we target the functional drivers of reflux. This involves using neuro-acupuncture to improve the tone of the diaphragm and esophageal sphincters while ensuring that stomach acid moves downward through the digestive tract rather than upward.
3. Autonomic Stabilization
Since reflux is frequently a physical manifestation of a ‘fight or flight’ response, we focus on the long-term stabilization of the autonomic nervous system. This reduces the frequency of stress-induced flare-ups and helps the body maintain healthy digestive mechanics under pressure.
Integrated Clinical Care
We believe that LPR and chronic reflux are best managed through a collaborative medical lens. Our practitioners work alongside ENTs (Ear, Nose, and Throat specialists) and Gastroenterologists to ensure that our acupuncture protocols complement your broader medical treatment. As AHPRA-registered practitioners based in the East Melbourne medical hub, we uphold the highest safety standards for patients with complex digestive and respiratory symptoms.
HICAPS & Major Health Fund Rebates
Acuvia makes managing chronic health issues administratively seamless. We offer on-site HICAPS for immediate claims. Our clinical sessions are recognized by all major Australian health funds for private insurance rebates, ensuring your care is both professional and accessible.
Reflux & LPR FAQs
How is “Silent Reflux” (LPR) different from GERD?
GERD usually involves heartburn and acid regurgitation. LPR (Silent Reflux) often doesn’t cause heartburn. Instead, it presents as a chronic cough, hoarse voice, post-nasal drip, and a sensation of a “lump” in the throat (globus sensation).
Can acupuncture help if my reflux is caused by stress?
Yes. Stress is a primary trigger for reflux because it causes the esophageal sphincters to relax inappropriately. Acupuncture is highly effective at shifting the nervous system out of the ‘stress’ state and back into ‘digest’ mode.
How many sessions will I need?
While some patients feel an improvement in throat clarity within 3-4 sessions, chronic LPR typically requires a course of 8-10 sessions to fully stabilize the sphincter muscles and the nervous system pathways.
